Dexter prequel series Original Sin has cast Shadow and Bone’s Patrick Gibson as the main character.

Announced in February 2023, the prequel’s set in Miami during 1991 – 15 years prior to the events of Dexter – where student Dexter Morgan can no longer keep his murderous urges at bay.

Deadline reports that Mr Robot’s Christian Slater will play Dexter’s adoptive dad Harry in the show, while Senior Year star Molly Brown is onboard as younger sister Debra.

As Dexter grapples with his desire to kill in Original Sin he confides in Harry, who teaches his son the ‘Code’ he will live by later in life – finding and killing those who escaped punishment for their crimes by the justice system, while making sure he isn’t caught in the process.

However, as he starts a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department, Dexter will face plenty of challenges along the way.

Gibson, whose credits also include The OA and The Portable Door, plays the same character portrayed by Michael C Hall in the main series.

Original Sin will have ten episodes and is due to air on Showtime and streaming service Paramount+.

News of Original Sin casting comes two years since the conclusion of limited series Dexter: New Blood, a sequel which saw the Bay Harbour Butcher killed by his own son Harrison.

Showrunner Clyde Phillips explained to Rotten Tomatoes of this shocking twist at the time: “We needed him to [die], I think. Dexter is an antihero, which is [still] a hero that we like, but he is still psychotic. And he kills people, and you’re not supposed to kill people.

“So it’s, in a way, it’s just desserts. In a way, it’s what has to happen. And as for the specifics of the method of how it happened, that evolved in the writing room. We had great writers, and it’s what we call ‘best idea wins.'”
