Fans think Netflix’s Lucifer missed a major plot hole in season 6

Lucifer Season 6 brought the story of Tom Ellis’ devil and his partner, Chloe Decker, to an emotional end — and it’s one that has fans divided. While some are satisfied with where Lucifer left things after its final season arrived on Netflix, others feel let down by the show’s conclusion. Some even believe the series missed a major plot hole while enacting its devastating twist. Are they onto something?

Chloe and Lucifer are separated at the end of ‘Lucifer’ Season 6
Lucifer Season 6 tackles many of the show’s usual conflicts — the debate over whether Lucifer should become God, the challenges to his relationship with Chloe, and the approaching apocalypse. However, the arrival of Lucifer and Chloe’s time-traveling daughter Rory (Brianna Hildebrand) introduces a brand-new storyline into the mix.

Rory arrives seeking vengeance against her father, who she claims abandoned her and Chloe. Lucifer is baffled by this accusation. However, the group eventually realizes he left at Rory’s request.

Upon realizing her father isn’t so bad — and has a knack for saving people — Rory suggests Lucifer takes over Hell with a new intention: helping those imprisoned there. She begs him not to change anything about her childhood, a request he reluctantly agrees to.

The series finale sees Lucifer and Chloe going their separate ways despite their love for one another. Lucifer returns to Hell to save the souls there, while Chloe raises their daughter on Earth. And although they’re reunited following her death, it’s a fairly heartbreaking way to end Lucifer Season 6.

Fans think the Netflix show missed a major plot hole in season 6

Naturally, those hoping for a concrete happy ending for Lucifer and Chloe weren’t thrilled with how season 6 progressed. Some fans even questioned how much sense their separation made. While there’s little doubt the two would do anything for their daughter, did they really need to go decades without seeing one another?

The entire point of Lucifer’s absence was to avoid a time paradox, but Chloe knew where he’d gone. She kept that secret from her daughter for years, and she could have done so while still seeing Lucifer.

Fans took to Reddit to air their frustrations with the finale, and they found a few inconsistencies. One Redditor questioned why Lucifer couldn’t at least stick around for Rory’s birth:

“My own issue was mostly the fact that sure, they want Rory growing up thinking Lucifer disappeared, otherwise you get the time paradox, but there was no reason Lucifer had to leave right away, or not be there for her birth at the very least. She wouldn’t remember or know anything about him being there that early in her life, Chloe can still tell her what she needs to hear. Nobody has memories before 3 or so years old anyway.”

Others pointed to similar solutions, wondering why Chloe and Lucifer couldn’t meet without telling Rory.

“It was only Rory that he needed to keep in the dark,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “He could have easily visited Chloe without interfering with the time loop.”

Could Chloe and Lucifer have stayed together?

So, could Lucifer and Chloe have found a way around Rory’s request? That’s a tricky question, both because of Lucifer’s character and the time-travel scenario. Ideally, meeting with Chloe in secret wouldn’t impact Rory’s time loop in any way. However, there’s plenty of room for error in that situation. And even the smallest mistake could spark catastrophic results.

The bigger issue is that Lucifer remains “a devil of his word,” and he made a vow to Rory. While he physically could have visited Chloe and gone back on his promise, he always insisted on his honesty. Lying to his child would throw him completely out of character.

Of course, one could question why Rory wanted him to leave her and Chloe, knowing only her time loop had to be kept intact. In that sense, fans do make a point. But time-travel plots will always raise questions like these. At least Lucifer and Chloe found each other in the afterlife.

Lucifer Season 6 is currently streaming on Netflix.
