Can you believe it’s been nearly a decade since Stranger Things premiered on Netflix in 2016? Star Finn Wolfhard is looking back at the show’s surreal journey as the massively popular sci-fi series prepares to reach its conclusion — and he recently shared the one thing he’d change about the entire experience.
Wolfhard was only 13 years old when he landed the role of Mike Wheeler; he told People that, knowing what he knows now, he would change one thing about his life, career, and fame.
“I don’t think I’d ever go back and do something over, but maybe I would go back to when the show first came out and blew up, and I would directly put myself into therapy,” the actor shared. “But it was so crazy and overnight, that there was not really any time to think about that.”
The star has been open about his mental health in the past; in 2023, Wolfhard told GQ that he started having panic attacks when he was 15 but “did not talk about anything, because I just was having this crazy whirlwind career, so there was no time, or at least we didn’t feel [there was].”
“Everyone was like, ‘Look at him, he’s fine. He’s having the best time,” Wolfhard continued, “But in reality, I was probably also developing and things were happening in my brain and anxieties were forming and things that I didn’t realize that I had to bury because of how I had to feel at work.”
Though the final season of Stranger Things has definitely made both fans and stars nostalgic and reflective, Wolfhard told People that he wouldn’t want to change anything about the past ten years too dramatically. “I would end up probably making a mistake in a different way anyways,” he explained. “I think childhood, and life in general, is about trial and error.”
When filming wrapped on the fifth and final season of the series — which is confirmed to release this year — Finn Wolfhard said goodbye to Hawkins, his character Mike Wheeler, and his friends and costars with a sentimental Instagram photo dump and caption.
“We just wrapped Stranger Things Season 5. I’m still in shock. We shot it for a year and I’ll miss all of my friends and our characters terribly,” he wrote. In the first pic, we see the cast during season one, with Wolfhard describing the experience as “a bunch of goofy young people making something they think is cool but really have no clue what’s to come.”
