With Outlander offscreen for the foreseeable future, fans are delving back into the previous seasons for solace.

Despite Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) being star-crossed lovers and devoted to each other, there was still one big topic the 20th century doctor struggled to talk to her Highlander husband about.

Claire felt unable to discuss her first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) with Jamie, even though she was already married to him when she first fell through the stones.

Previously speaking on the Outlander podcast, executive producers Ronald D. Moore and Toni Graphia shed light about this point of contention between the couple.

The creative duo were talking about this gulf between Jamie and Claire after she felt able to speak to Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) about Frank in season two.

Graphia said: “Claire, ironically, there’s not anyone she can talk to really about Frank, especially Jamie. Even though Jamie knows about Frank, she’s worried about him.

“We felt it was important to show she loved Frank once, she’s concerned about him.

“He’s on her mind and Master Raymond becomes her confidante, and I love that when she starts to talk to Master Raymond about him, it builds a friendship between them.”

Moore added: “I don’t think this was in the book.”

Graphia said: “No, actually this was your idea. I had in the first draft he read her astrological chart, which actually made no sense because she wasn’t born in the year that she tells him she’s born in.

“He gleaned there was something off about her because she lied and it doesn’t add up.”

The scene in question saw Claire confronting Master Raymond in the wake of her poisoning as she tried to discover the culprit.

While she was at the apothecary, she also shared her fears about Frank and wanted to know how her first husband was doing after her sudden absence.

Master Raymond surprised Claire, informing her that she would see Frank again one day.

As the season two opener revealed, Claire did indeed return to Frank in the 20th century.

Graphia said the scene in the apothecary was a “nice Easter egg” for fans with Claire and Frank reuniting later down the line.

The friendship between Claire and Master Raymond deepened after he gave her a necklace, which would change colour in the presence of poison.

He also saved her life after she suffered a baby loss with Faith and was on the verge of death.

Moreover, Claire later saved his life when he was arrested by the king on charges of sorcery.
