HBO has confirmed some of the core cast members for its upcoming Harry Potter TV show.

Following the same events as the films, the series is billed as a “faithful adaptation” of the Harry Potter books.

In the first big casting announcement from the upcoming series, several of the adult cast members have been revealed.

Conclave’s John Lithgow has been confirmed to take on the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, a role famously played by both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the original film franchise.

Alongside Lithgow, Ozark’s Janet McTeer and Gangs of London actor Paapa Essiedu will play fellow Hogwarts teachers Professors Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape.

Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost will star as half-giant Rubeus Hagrid.

Rounding out the cast, Luke Thallon will play Professor Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse will star as Argus Filch.

“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life,” said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer.

News of the series divided fans when it was first announced due to the controversy surrounding the author of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling.

In recent years, Rowling has repeatedly faced criticism for her views on trans people and their rights. She has shared views that have been deemed by many as transphobic, which she denies.

Responding to the backlash to Rowling and the upcoming series, WB issued a statement.

“We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,” they said in a statement to Variety. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views.

“We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”
