Henry Cavill has been the most enthusiastic person on set of Netflix’s The Witcher and a solid rock for all viewers. He was the first to campaign very hard for his role and after the consistent pursuit of his role, he finally was cast. Cavill loved the books and games and has the immense favour of the fandom. Co-star Freya Allan even called him a “Witcher encyclopedia” at one point. Alas, his journey as Geralt of Rivia has come to an end.

Farewell, White Wolf, you will be missed

In a most shocking announcement on October 29, 2022, Henry Cavill took to his Instagram to announce his departure from Netflix’s The Witcher. This will take effect from Season 4 and onwards as Season 3 has already been filmed.

He wrote: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.”

No one could have seen this coming, but it may have some relation to his return as Superman in DCEU. We’re sure to have more insight and commentary later on this news.

UPDATE: Deadline Hollywood, citing their inside sources, say that “Cavill had made a short-term deal for The Witcher and felt it was time to move on after three seasons on the show, which films overseas and has a demanding production schedule.”

They also revealed that Henry’s co-stars renegotiated their contracts heading into Season 4.

Liam Hemsworth is the new Geralt of Rivia

The Witcher can’t be the same show without Geralt of Rivia, so a replacement is inevitable. Cavill continued his post:

“In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

He continued: “Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Hemsworth himself also made the joint announcement:

“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.

Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Season 4 officially confirmed

And yes, this makes The Witcher Season 4 officially confirmed in a bittersweet way, but to be fair, an announcement like this is surely more bitter than sweet.

Season 3 of The Witcher is in post-production for a Summer 2023 release. The live-action prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin has been set a Christmas 2022 release. Stay tuned to Redanian Intelligence and do pop into our Discord server to join in on The Witcher conversation.
