HBO boss Casey Bloys has given House of the Dragon fans an update on when they can expect season 2.
Filming for the Game of Thrones spin-off is set to begin next month in the UK and in Spain, as confirmed by a listing from the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List.
While the eagerly-anticipated season won’t be hitting our screens this year, in a conversation with Variety, Bloys has said 2024 “is a good guess” for its return.
He did not confirm an exact release date, or even the time of year fans can expect the latest season to drop, though he did say it’s also “a good guess” that the show won’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season.
The eligibility period for the 2024 Emmy season ends on May 31, 2024, so from this information, it seems likely that the House of the Dragon season 2 won’t be airing earlier than next summer.
Bloys also spoke about whether we will eventually get more frequent Game of Thrones offerings in the form of other spin-off series.
“My philosophy is a good script is number one priority,” he said. “I am not doing it based on wanting to have one [show] a year, two a year. I want to do it based on the scripts that we’re excited about.”
Bloys continued: “Remember, to get House of the Dragon following up from Game of Thrones, we developed a lot of shows, shot a pilot, developed a bunch of scripts and we got House of the Dragon.
“To do that again is going to take the same amount of effort. You have to develop a lot of things, try things. You never know what’s going to work. So we’re currently doing that.
“I’m not opposed to any number of shows. There’s probably a natural limit to how many fans want, but I’m open to any as long as we feel really good about the scripts and the prospects for a series.”
Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin recently shared how changes at HBO Max including its merger with Discovery+ have impacted some of his upcoming projects. In a blog post on his website, the author said he was working on “several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO”, before adding: “Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development.
“None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead.”
Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
