The DC Animated Universe’s current “Tomorrowverse” continuity has received a warm response from fans, and the next chapter is this month’s Justice League: Warworld. Now, thanks to Toonado.com, we have the first clip from this epic adventure.
In that, Batman has become a barbaric mercenary in the Hollow Earth realm of Skartaris. We pick up with the former Caped Crusader fighting for his survival and left with no other choice than to strike a deal for his freedom with the villainous Warlord, a moment which promises to be key in this vastly different DCAU movie.
Unfortunately, the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes mean we won’t be able to bring your our usual interview coverage. Those likely mean no star-studded panel for the movie at Comic-Con either, though we’re hoping some big 2024 announcements will still be made.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn wants all future animated projects to be folded into the new DCU with the same actors playing these characters across all forms of media. As a result, the DCAU’s future is uncertain and it could do with a hit if the plan is for these movies to continue.
“Until now, the Justice League has been a loose association of superpowered individuals,” reads the synopsis. “But when they are swept away to Warworld, a place of unending brutal gladiatorial combat, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the others must somehow unite to form an unbeatable resistance able to lead an entire planet to freedom.”
The Boys and Batman: The Long Halloween star Jensen Ackles will lead the cast as Batman/Officer Wayne, with Darren Criss as Superman/Agent Kent and Stana Katic as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
As for the rest of the ensemble, that includes Ike Amadi as Martian Manhunter/J’onn J’onzz, Troy Baker as Jonah Hex, Matt Bomer as Old Man, Roger C. Cross as Machiste, Brett Dalton as Bat Lash, Trevor Duvall as Drifter, John DiMaggio as Lobo, Robin Atkin Downes as Mongul, Frank Grillo as Agent Faraday, Rachel Kimsey as Mariah Romanova and David Lodge as Sheriff, and Damian O’Hare as Deimos, and Teddy Sears as Warlord.
Jeff Wamester (Legion of Super-Heroes) directs Justice League: Warworld from a script by Jeremy Adams (Supernatural), Ernie Albacker (Justice League Dark: Apocalypse War) & Josie Campbell (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power).
Justice League: Warworld arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on July 24 and Digital on July 25.
