Legacies spoilers follow for the season 3 premiere episode.
Legacies is back on the US TV this January 21 kicking off its 3rd season in typically twisty style, and The Vampire Diaries spin-off has already dropped two major bombshells in its season three premiere episode.
First off, Chad (Charles Jazz Terrier) somehow managed to summon both a monster named Nimue (also known as The Lady of the Lake) and a dangerous being called the Green Knight, both of whom were hunting the legendary sword Excalibur.
Nimue explained that only a “worthy” warrior could pick up Excalibur – which actually meant that only a person from a royal blood line could wield it. After a number of the characters tried and failed to pull Excalibur from the stone it was resting in, Rafael Waithe (Peyton Alex Smith) provided a big surprise when he easily pulled the sword from the stone and launched it into the Green Knight’s head.
Legacies executive producer Brett Matthews has teased further details about Rafael’s big family discovery to TVLine, revealing that Raf is finally going to find out more about his origins.
“That moment for Raf was obviously a very big one,” he said. “Raf’s journey through the first couple of seasons has always been about family. As a foster child, he’s always wondered where he comes from, and finding out that he’s connected to a royal blood line is an unexpected answer to that question.
“So he’s finally beginning to discover all of the things he’s always wanted to know about himself, including his family origins. He really felt like the perfect person to come in and save the day.”
Rafael’s huge discovery wasn’t the only twist of the episode either, as big things were happening for Chad and Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang) too.
While they were walking in the woods in the dark, Chad suddenly threw up some black goo and died, leading a terrified Alyssa to meet with the Necromancer (Ben Geurens), who informed Alyssa that she would need to become his “eternal acolyte” in order to be sure of avoiding the same fate.
But is Chad actually gone? After all, this isn’t the first time that he’s died. Well, according to Matthews, despite the fact that death isn’t always permanent in this show this is really the end for Chad – for now, at least.
“Death is pretty fluid, but at the same time, it did feel like a tragic end to Chad,” he explained. “He’s a small character, but he definitely grew on us. I don’t know if we’ll ever see Chad again, but he’s pretty definitely dead at the end of this episode.
“His impact on the Necromancer will be felt moving forward. He will live on in other ways.”
Matthews also addressed whether Vampire Diaries star Candice King will make the jump to Legacies as Caroline Forbes, teasing that he would “love to have the challenge” of slotting Caroline into the show.
