Lucifer star Tom Ellis recently revealed that he felt like a bit of a fraud while filming Season 5 of the show.
“So Michael impersonating Lucifer was weird,” Ellis revealed during a live Q&A on StageIt.com. “Yes, getting into character as Michael in the first instance was weird, because I really enjoyed it but at the same time, I hadn’t felt that way on this set for a long time, in that I was living in new territory for me as a character.”
Ellis added that he “didn’t have the same comfort level” playing Michael-as-Lucifer, noting, “…because I played Lucifer for such a long time, it’s just like, flicking a switch now, almost.” He continued, “And Michael wasn’t. So I really had to think about that. And so that was the challenge.”
Ellis also revealed that playing the dual part was an especially weird experience because he was doing it in front of people who had known him as Lucifer for so long.
“I had to sort of get through the initial kind of feelings of ‘God, I feel like a massive fraud’ and really trust in the choices that I’d made and just go for it,” the actor explained. “So yeah, it was a bit of challenge, but ultimately, one that I relished.” He did note, however, that it’s a challenge he doesn’t plan to “rush too quickly to do again.”
Fans will recall that Lucifer’s twin brother, the archangel Michael, served as the primary antagonist in Season 5a. After Lucifer decided to return to Hell for all eternity, Michael grew jealous and ventured to Earth with the intention of ruining his brother’s reputation. Lucifer eventually returned to Earth and gave his mischievous brother a scar on his face so that he could never impersonate him again.
Ellis’s comments came during the same Q&A in which he revealed that he’d like to star in a musical in the future — if the project feels like a good fit. “You know, certainly like, doing music on the show has made me realize that I’d like to, like carry on singing and do that in my professional career as well, in terms of acting,” the actor shared in response to a fan. “So should the opportunity come up to do a musical or something like that? Yeah, then yes.”
Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. Season 5, Part 1 is available on Netflix now.
