Money Heist ending explained as The Professor’s plan comes out

Money Heist spoilers follow.

The heist has finally been completed with a nailbiting end that left fans wondering if the Money Heist gang would ever get their happy ending.

Following the death of Tokyo at the end of season five part one of the Netflix series, it was up to part two to bring the show home for a final goodbye – and hopefully keep everyone else intact.

In the final five episodes of La Casa de Papel, some truths finally revealed themselves as the squad made a last-ditch effort to build themselves a new life.

Did they succeed? Here’s everything you need to know.

Money Heist ending explained: How does La Casa de Papel end?

Episode 10 of season five, ‘A Family Tradition’, opens with things looking bleak for the heist team. The Professor, the leader of their operation, has surrendered himself to the police, and their mission appears failed.

Handing himself over inside a bank, The Professor is grilled by Tamayo about the whereabouts of the gold, before arresting him.

He also lists the string of offences being brought upon his team. However, whoever tells him where the gold is will be given an entirely new life in exchange.

But never let it be said that The Professor is a man without a plan, and instead – with some outside help – he releases a video to the world explaining how he scammed the Royal Bank of Spain.

The video has a catastrophic effect on Spain as a whole, with the stock market crashing as investors start predicting the country’s downfall.

With the country facing a financial crisis, the team begins to scramble, with Denver fearing for the safety of his son and almost handing himself over to the police.

The Professor in turn is tortured by Tamayo, who he tries to bring over to his side, while Sierra goes on a mission to find the missing gold.

But when that fails, The Professor even has a backup plan to that backup plan, with the gold suddenly being returned to Spanish authorities and the “crisis being averted”.

However, it turns out that the gold is actually painted brass, and this was all a massive scheme to try and prove to people that wealth and security is an illusion.

Backed into a corner, Tamayo accepts defeat, agrees to pretend the gang had been killed in the fallout, and allows Spain to return to a more secure financial footing.

Time to say goodbye

Less than 24 hours later, the heist squad are handed new passports and, essentially, new lives. Denver has reunited with Stockholm, and admits to The Professor that he had ‘nearly blown it’ with his final play.

Finally getting all the money they needed to start afresh, they head off in a helicopter, never to be seen again.

Knowing he’s won, The Professor celebrates – but not before he asks Sierra, who has also turned up to start her new life, where the gold really is.

It turns out it’s been hidden in the small house built by Tatiana and Rafael, and is already halfway to Portugal in the back of a truck…
