The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent star Nicolas Cage has landed his next lead movie role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage will star in psychological thriller The Surfer, with filming set to begin in Australia this September.

The film follows the story of a man (Cage) who’s recently returned to his Australian hometown after years abroad in the USA.

However things have changed in the town and when the man finds himself humiliated in-front of his son by a gang of surfers on his childhood beach, he decides to take on the group and their claims over the bay. The conflict soon spirals out of control, pushing the man to the edge of his sanity.

Lorcan Finnegan (Nocebo) will be directing the feature and Thomas Martin will handle screenwriting duties. Further casting is yet to be announced.

“Nicolas Cage is the perfect actor for this iconic role and will undoubtedly deliver a tour de force performance which is sure to be something very special and will captivate audiences worldwide,” said Sam Hall, who is producing the film on behalf of Mossbank.

Throughout his four decade career Cage has starred in multiple films including The Wicker Man, Kick-Ass and Con Air.

His most recent outing saw him star as Dracula alongside The Menu’s Nicholas Hoult in Renfield, a retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the film, Cage revealed he found one of the film’s gory moments both “hilarious” and “horrible.”

“Nic Hoult punches somebody’s head off in the movie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a movie before, that’s new,” he said.

“I like the whole scene with Dracula going on a rampage in the support group. Obviously it’s all wrong and hilarious and horrible all at the same time.”

Renfield is out in cinemas now.
