Outlander season six will land in early 2022 and fans are keen to see if there will be further clues about Jamie Fraser’s ghost, which appeared in the first ever episode.
For years, Outlander fans have tried to guess how and why Jamie Fraser’s (played by Sam Heughan) ghost was watching Claire (Caitriona Balfe) at her hotel window in Inverness in the first ever episode. There have been plenty of theories, with some certain it is a dead Jamie waiting for the love of his life to join him in the after life. However, a new theory has emerged, pointing at a link to Claire’s first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies).
Fans of the Starz series know Claire didn’t see Jamie’s ghost as he watched her, rather it was Frank who spotted him.
Returning from a walk, Frank was horrified to see a highlander gazing up at his wife as she dressed.
He ran up the man ready to confront him, but when he reached the highlander, he turned and walked away.
Fans speculated who the man was until author Diana Gabaldon confirmed it was a 25-year-old Jamie.
The age has led many to believe Jamie was killed at Culloden, which has been dismissed.
But one fan thinks Frank may have explained how the highlander’s ghost was able to appear in the 1940s.
Reddit user UnderlyingMechanisms posted: “If you are looking to interpret the first book as a text by itself (that is, without using other texts to inform your interpretation of it, which is how it was originally written), there is an explanation in the chapter in which Jamie’s ghost appears.
“Frank tells Claire, ‘…ghosts are freed on the holy days, and can wander about at will, to do harm or good as they please.’
“If you are looking to use the books that come afterwards in your interpretation of the first novel, there are many other possible explanations given within their texts.
“I like the one given in DIA – Claire narrates: ‘I thought that was perhaps how some ghosts were made; where a will and a purpose had survived, heedless of the frail flesh that fell by the wayside, unable to sustain life long enough.’”
The fan continued: “I think Jamie had a will and a purpose that survived beyond death and that was Claire.”
This theory ties in well with Claire and Jamie’s strong bond and similar ideas have been pitched before.
Could it be Jamie simply could not be without Claire even after he passed and had to return as a ghost to watch over her?
Other fans agreed with the clue from Frank as another posted: “Also Jamie gives us some hints about this at least a couple of times in the books, when he tells Claire that he will wait for her after he dies, even 200 years if he has to.
“Here’s the thing, his soul has to wait for 200 years because even if they die together in the past, Claire also has to die in her own time and that could mean the last time she travels back to the past, if she doesn’t return again at some point and die in her present.
“My question is why is Frank able to see his ghost, what connection is between them, is there a connection between them, because there are also those references to Frank’s ghost in the past?”
Fans know Claire returned to the 18th Century after 20 years apart from Jamie as she believed he’d died at Culloden.
When she learned the truth about Jamie and Frank had died, she returned to be with her true love.
If they can wait 20 years to reunite, what is 200 years?
Outlander season 6 airs March 6 2022 on Starz.
