Outlander star Lauren Lyle has cast doubt on her character Marsali Fraser’s fate in the eighth and final season of the historical drama.

She also hinted the final outing may not be the end of her time on the series after all.

Following an absence in season seven, Marsali is set to make more appearances in the final chapter of Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) adventures.

Scottish actress Lauren, also known for the ITV crime drama Karen Pirie, has become a fan-favourite on the Starz drama ever since she debuted as Jamie’s stepdaughter in season two.

“It’s dead weird being back,” she admitted following her absence. “It’s cool.

“It’s like nothing’s changed, but everything’s changed, it’s really good.”

Speaking to virginradio.co.uk, Lauren stressed how important it was for her to say goodbye to her iconic role, even after landing equally successful gigs on Karen Pirie and the BBC’s Vigil.

However, she also suggested the final season may not be the last fans see of Marsali.

“Whether or not it’s a full goodbye, we don’t know,” she speculated.

“But it’s a sign off that it’s like… it changed my life that show and the fans changed my life. I wanted to do it for that and just to culminate that story.

“It’s been so important, and it’s such a brilliant show, I’m really pleased to be back.”

Lauren was keeping her lips sealed regarding any major plot details for season eight but promised Outlander fans it’s going to be an emotional ride.

“As always, I can’t tell you anything, but it’s very dramatic, like you’ll be in tears,” she added.

“I think you’ll be in tears a lot. And Marsali’s got so many kids again, it’s ridiculous.”

Lauren’s cryptic comments could be hinting at a surprise cameo in the upcoming Outlander prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Fans have also called for further spin-offs, including more adventures from Lord John Grey (David Berry), so there could be endless opportunities for Lauren and other cast members to return.
