Outlander’s Sam Heughan opened up about his character’s fate ahead of the season seven premiere.
Outlander ended on a major cliffhanger after Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) was wrongly arrested for Malva Christie’s (Jessica Reynolds) death. With the highly anticipated seventh season in the making, Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan opened up on his character’s fate.
Fans were first introduced to Jamie during the pilot episode after Claire mysteriously time-travelled from 1945 to 1743.
He was a Scottish warrior who was in hiding with Dougal MacKenzie (Graham McTavish) after being falsely accused of murder.
Dougal had also taken a disorientated Claire under his wing after he rescued her from being sexually assaulted by Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies).
In order to ensure her safety, Claire and Jamie were married which led her to become Scottish by marriage.
Despite their arranged union, the pair eventually fell deeply in love and navigated through the trials and tribulations of the 1700s together.
This came to a devastating end when the Battle of Culloden began, with Jamie fighting for his country, they were both convinced he would die.
As a result, he forced a pregnant Claire to return to the future and back to her worried husband Frank Randall.
After 20 years had passed, Claire discovered Jamie had survived the war and with Frank’s death, she travelled back to find him.
With Claire imprisoned and the pair separated again, viewers watched the final scenes as Jamie and his friends rode across the beach to presumably rescue her from Wilmington Prison.
Actor Sam Heughan reflected on his role as Jamie as he opened up about a major change ahead for his character.
He shared: “I think stoics obviously Jamie’s fortitude and his natural place, he’s a very strong man and strong in the face of adversity.
“But also this is a relationship, they’ve been together a long time, they know each other so well and the fact that she keeps secrets from him, even this season, hides things from him is difficult.”
Sam continued: “He’s also more fragile now, I think as he’s got older he has more to lose.
“In the old days, he was pretty tempestuous, pretty active man, wouldn’t think twice before punching someone or getting into battle.
“Now he does, he doesn’t care about his body per se but he cares about losing others.”
The actor added: “He has a lot more to lose, he has his whole family now, his extended family.
“The one thing is Claire, having done it for a long time, he can’t live without her.”
Claire was arrested for the murder of her apprentice Malva who she discovered was dead in her garden.
As the teenager was pregnant, she stepped into her professional shoes and aimed to save her unborn baby but this proved unsuccessful.
With Claire covered in blood, rumours about Claire being a murderer began to spread and as a result, she was arrested and could be put to death if found guilty.
