Outlander’s leading man Sam Heughan didn’t exactly have the best experience when he auditioned for Mamma Mia.
Outlander star Sam Heughan has opened up on his less-than-impressive Mamma Mia! audition prior to embodying the iconic Scot Jamie Fraser.
The Starz period drama returned for season seven in June but fans are having to wait for the second lot of eight episodes until the New Year.
As of yet, no official return date has been announced, leaving subscribers eager for more from the show, as well as its popular cast.
Actor Sam Heughan, who has been portraying Jamie Fraser since 2014, had been in shows like A Very British Sex Scandal, River City, The Wild West and Party Animals.
Some Outlander fans may not be aware though that he also auditioned for the role of Dominic Cooper’s Sky in the hit musical movie Mamma Mia!
At the time of him auditioning, Heughan was also performing in Noel Coward’s The Vortex which meant him donning a 1920s style moustache.
But even without the daring facial hair, Mamma Mia! didn’t seem to be in the cards for the 43-year-old Scotsman.
Opening up to Backstage, he explained: “I was just completely wrong for Mamma Mia! anyway.
“I was working with Will Young, this British musician, and he helped me with the song.
“He was, like, ‘This is really high, I’ll transfer it down an octave.’ So I felt reasonably comfortable with it.
Heughan continued: “And I went in and I gave it to the piano player and I was, like, ‘I’m just gonna put this down an octave.’
“And he was, like, ‘No you’re not. I’m the musical supervisor, you’re going to do it like this.’
“It was like strangling a cat, singing for Mamma Mia!”
Heughan wasn’t the only one from the Outlander cast who had a terrible auditioning experience before joining the time travel series.
His co-star Tobias Menzies, who was behind Frank and Jonathan Randall, also opened up to Backstage about auditioning for Ewan McGregor’s part in Moulin Rouge.
He stated: “I was so young, I was literally just out of college.
“But they were just doing that sort of mass casting, just ring up everyone and put them on tape.
“And I had to sing and dance and it was just ridiculous. What was I doing in that room?
“Terrible! I tried so hard, it was so terrible!”
Outlander is available to watch on Starz.
