The stars were involved in an emotional scene during the fourth season of the hit time-travelling drama based on the books by Diana Gabaldon
Navigating the challenges of TV production is no small undertaking, and Outlander fans may be surprised to learn that a key moment from the show’s fourth season featuring stars Sam Heughan and Sophie Skelton had to be filmed again.
In the emotionally charged scene, viewers watched as Jamie and Brianna had a heart-to-heart about her traumatic experience with Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers).
In episode 706 of The Official Outlander Podcast (on Apple), Outlander executive producer Matthew B. Roberts revealed that unpredictable weather rendered the footage unusable – despite their best efforts. Opting for quality over convenience, the team made the decision to reschedule the shoot for a more cooperative day, ensuring the series didn’t compromise on this significant plot point.
Matthew admitted that crafting and creating each Outlander season is like solving a complex jigsaw. The team continually uses Diana Gabaldon’s original work as a guide but inconsistent weather conditions can often disrupt their plans, resulting in complete reshoots of some scenes.
Matthew touched on the need to reshoot the compelling season 4 moment featuring Jamie and Brianna. Originally, the scene involved the two characters inspecting rabbit traps as they walked.
Sophie’s character disclosed her sexual assault by Stephen Bonnet, while Jamie provided emotional support. They filmed Sam’s scene first against the backdrop of a nice day, but the weather turned brutal when they began to shoot Sophie’s dialogue.
“It started to sleet, and there was some hail when they were on Sophie,” Matthew said. In the editing room, Matthew and the Outlander team found that the initial footage of the poignant scene between Jamie and Brianna just wasn’t cutting it. They quickly decided a complete reshoot was necessary.
Choosing a day with more favourable weather, they redid the sequence featuring Sam and Sophie. While the audience remained unaware of this behind-the-scenes change, it’s reassuring to know the team chose to redo a crucial scene rather than forcing the original to fit.
