Peaky Blinders spoilers follow.

Ever since Tom Hardy’s return to Peaky Blinders as Alfie Solomons in season six was confirmed, fans have been anticipating chaos of the best kind.

After being shot in the face by Thomas ‘Tommy’ Shelby (Cillian Murphy) at the end of season 4, fans were left shocked when Solomons (Hardy) was later unexpectedly brought back for the season five finale.

The character was later confirmed to be returning in season 6 too, with Hardy delighting fans when he made another appearance in the latest episode, which aired on Sunday (March 6).

Speaking to ahead of the latest episode, however, show creator Steven Knight revealed that Solomons’ dramatic return in the final season wasn’t always written, and that Hardy himself insisted on the character’s comeback.

Asked whether the plan was ‘always’ for Solomons to return in the final season, Knight told the publication: “The plan changed, let me put it that way – because Tom does love this character.”

Solomons was believed to be dead after being shot by Tommy in season four, but the season 5 finale confirmed that he was still alive, although his face was left badly disfigured due to the injuries he suffered.

The season six premiere made reference to the ‘Solomons family’, which had fans speculating that Tommy had reconciled with the wounded gang leader, while Sunday’s episode saw Hardy return as Solomons once again as Shelby visited him in prison and convinced him to go into business together.

Speaking earlier this year in an interview with Radio Times, Knight said viewers should expect “chaos” from Solomons’ return this season.

“I think it’s difficult to explain without giving stuff away, but we might find Alfie in a position not quite as strong as he normally is,” he added. “And the question is, can he build himself back up?”

Peaky Blinders series 6 airs on Sundays at 9pm.
