RICK AND MORTY fans were introduced to co-creator Justin Roiland’s latest project back in May. Since then, viewers have been wondering if a Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites crossover is on the cards.

Video chat panels for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con took place online after live events were cancelled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland stopped by to preview the new series with his creative partner, Dan Harmon.

The animation mastermind also previewed his new solo project for Hulu, Solar Opposites.

Season one of the sci-fi sitcom aired in May 2020, and two more seasons have already been ordered by the streaming service.

Roiland described his new series as an ‘off-the-rails’ comedy about a family of aliens trying to adjust to their new life on Earth.

Fans quickly took to the new series, noting its similar art design to its Adult Swim predecessor Rick and Morty as well as Roiland’s familiar style of dark humour.

Due to the two show’s similarities, Roiland has often been asked if a Rick and Morty/Solar Opposites crossover could ever be possible.

While he didn’t completely rule out the possibility, Roiland did explain there was a particularly sizable hurdle to get over first.

He explained: “The thing is now we’ve got to get these corporations on board to make nice with each other and lend the IP.”

Television series from different networks traditionally don’t crossover with each other, making it difficult to say if the Adult Swim and Hulu cartoons will ever meet.

Justin Roiland indicated the concept isn’t totally out of reach, but would require one huge condition to overcome.

He continued: “You’ve got to ask these giant lumbering mega-corporations that have merged together like water droplets growing into an ocean-sized whatever.”

“Maybe if they just finally merged together into one giant thing, it’ll happen.”

So, it looks like Hulu would have to purchase the rights to stream Adult Swim content for the crossover event to eventually happen.

Roiland’s co-creator on Solar Opposites, Mike McMahan, was more optimistic and even offered some ideas for what could take place in the crossover.

He suggested: “It would be everybody sitting in a room and they’d be writing emails asking the Power Rangers to do a crossover with Star Trek the whole time, and then at the end they’d be like ‘Woah, we’re out of time!’”

McMahan also teased the series already has crossovers with other major properties in the works for Solar Opposites’ next two seasons.

He went on: “As everybody knows, the first thing you do when you’re creating a new show, is you start to think of all the crossovers you can do.

“We’ve already written the Transformers crossover, the Star Wars crossover, the Muppet Babies crossover… we have a bunch more crossovers to write in case we can ever do them.”

Rick and Morty still has 60 more episodes ahead, so there is still plenty of time for the Adult Swim series to cross paths with other shows.
