Fear not, Riverdale fans. The CW series is going to be around for a while — well, at least the next three years.
In Jan. 2020, the show was renewed for a fifth season, but Archie Andrews himself (KJ Apa) confirmed that the comic-book-inspired show will be around even longer than that.
The ‘Riverdale’ Phenomenon
Riverdale: “The town with pep!” And plenty of murder, drama, and revenge. The compelling series premiered in 2017 and captured the attention of young people all over the world.
Thanks to the CW’s deal with Netflix, Riverdale has experienced a wealth of success. In the past, it could take months or even years for a series to make it to Netflix. The Ringer reported that entire seasons of the shows on the CW network are available on Netflix days after the finale premieres. Riverdale has been able to captivate their audience where they spend so much of their time — streaming platforms.

Availability isn’t the only thing that has allowed Riverdale to achieve success. The show includes beloved characters played by actors with fan clubs of their own, including Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhard), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Their popularity has influenced the show’s popularity and vice versa.

Apa is currently promoting his latest project, I Still Believe. The film tells the true story of Jeremy Camp, a Christian singer-songwriter who lost his wife to ovarian cancer.

In speaking with the Los Angeles Times about his new film, Apa shared that he shares the same contract with many of the other lead actors on Riverdale. He’ll be on the show for the next three years, which means his co-stars will also be part of the story for the foreseeable future.
Apa couldn’t share the specifics of his contract, but the length of its term is enough to keep Riverdale fans happy for a while.
What’s next for KJ Apa
While Riverdale is certainly a big project for Apa, he and his co-stars are consistently being offered more work. Apa began receiving movie offers after the second season of Riverdale.
No stranger to the silver screen, Sprouse starred in the 2019 drama Five Feet Apart. Charles Melton, who plays Reggie Mantel on the show, starred in The Sun Is Also a Star, a film based on the young adult novel. Madeline Petsch, however briefly, was in the horror flick Polaroid.
Apa explained that filming for Riverdale takes 10 months. In his two months of free time, it’s important that he be select about the projects that he chooses to work on, as Riverdale is the priority.
Apa said he asks himself, “‘Is it worth it? Should I just chill for two months?’” before taking on a project. Regardless of how tired he feels, Apa explained how he feels the need to continue working because he’s in his “prime time” and being offered so many great opportunities.
I Still Believe is Apa’s first step toward not being pegged as Archie Andrews for the rest of his life. He’ll likely do more films in the future, too. In his interview, Apa explained how much he loves working on Riverdale, but that he and his co-stars are “craving something else to bite into.”
