Riverdale Season 6 Might Bring Back Sabrina, the Teenage Witch

Sabrina Spellman made her long-overdue Riverdale debut during the fall season’s Rivervale event with hints of a future return to the series.

The success of Riverdale on The CW paved the road for spin-off shows set in the same universe such as Katy Keene and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Based on the Archie Comics characters, Riverdale and subsequent spin-offs presented its most popular intellectual properties as existing in one universe for the first time in live-action TV history: Archie, Betty and Veronica, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Josie and the Pussycats. Interestingly, the Riverdale universe doesn’t follow the more comedic approach of the mainstream Archie comics. Instead, it’s largely based on the publisher’s Archie Horror imprint, especially Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Loosely based on the comic book series of the same name, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has seen its fair share of wild storylines based on the occult. The series follows the exploits of Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a teenage witch who resides in the neighboring town of Greendale with her aunts Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto). While Sabrina had not made her debut on Riverdale prior to getting her own show, the series still reminded audiences that she’s part of that same universe by namedropping the town and bringing some minor characters over from the parent show. It was only a matter of time before Sabrina herself would show up on Riverdale, and on Dec. 7, 2021, Sabrina made her long-overdue debut on Episode 4 of the Rivervale event.

Picking up from the Riverdale Season 5 finale, a bomb that went off in Archie Andrews’ (KJ Apa) home led to the creation of the pocket universe known as Rivervale. In this universe, Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is revealed to be her ancestor Abigail cursed with immortality. In Episode 4, Abigail invites Sabrina to Rivervale to help her perform a soul transference spell to free herself of her immortality. In this universe, Sabrina is back to sporting blonde hair and is revealed to be at least a decade older than her mainstream counterpart. More interesting yet, the Rivervale version of Sabrina still died during the Eldritch Terrors like her mainstream counterpart and was subsequently resurrected.

Despite some of the major differences between the Riverdale and Rivervale timelines, it’s strongly implied the events of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4 still transpired in roughly the same way. In the main Riverdale universe, Sabrina’s family was part of a Satanic coven known as the Church of Night with Faustus Blackwood (Richard Coyle) as the high priest. After too many betrayals and transgressions, Blackwood was eventually ousted by his own coven, with Sabrina’s aunt Zelda becoming the new high priestess and repurposing the coven as the Order of Hecate. This new life was short-lived, however.

With all the craziness Sabrina endured in her own show, she eventually split herself into two people: Sabrina Morningstar, who embraced her place as the Dark Lord’s daughter in hell, and her normal self as Sabrina Spellman. This split created the paradox that led to the Eldritch Terrors, and this forced the two Sabrinas to make a choice: either merge back into one person or send one Sabrina to a parallel universe to correct the paradox. The two Sabrinas went with the latter decision, with Morningstar finding herself in the universe of the 1996 Sabrina, the Teenage Witch sitcom.

While the removal of one Sabrina should’ve corrected the paradox, the threat of the Eldritch Terrors persisted. This led to the destruction of the parallel universe, which also resulted the death of Morningstar. With no other options left, Sabrina Spellman sacrificed herself to stop the Eldritch Terrors from destroying her native universe, which resulted in her own death. While Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4 ended with Sabrina entering the Happy Hereafter with her boyfriend, Nick Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood), the upcoming comic book spin-off The Occult World of Sabrina will detail her resurrection. If Sabrina continues to appear in Riverdale Season 6, she’ll be a decade older like the rest of the cast.

If Rivervale is anything to go on, the older Sabrina is in a happier place in life, having seemingly overcome many of the challenges she faced as a teenager. The bigger question is who she ends up with as an adult. Since Season 4 of her show ended with her and Nick together, it’s highly likely she’s still with him, even a decade later. One of the major themes of their relationship is that their love is real and comes from a place of mutual respect and understanding. Lack of mutual understanding was what ultimately doomed Sabrina’s relationship with Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch) in Season 1.

On the other hand, with Harvey having grown accustomed to Sabrina’s supernatural life, an older Harvey would have the emotional maturity to handle being in a relationship with her. However, he’s also fully committed to Sabrina’s best friend, Rosalind “Roz” Walker (Jaz Sinclair), and isn’t the cheating type. If they do break up, it’ll most likely be due to Roz ending things with him after she realizes he still has feelings for Sabrina. Given that, odds are just as equally good Sabrina could still end up with Harvey since she never stopped loving him either.

The second half of Riverdale Season 6 will begin airing on the CW on March 20.
