Riverdale Season 4 will air its last episode of 2019 on Wednesday, December 11 on The CW, with the midseason finale possibly revealing what happened to Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) after many episodes of hints and clues.

Since fans first saw Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) burning Jughead’s hat in the Season 3 finale, Riverdale has been teasing what happened to the character.

Jughead’s fate was seemingly sealed in Season 4, Episode 4, when we saw his body lying on a slab in the coroner’s office, and in Episode 8 we saw Bret (Sean Depner) and Donna (Sarah Desjardins) telling Riverdale sheriff (and Jughead’s dad) FP (Skeet Ulrich) that Archie, Betty and Veronica killed their friend.

This adds further fuel to the fan speculation about what happened to Jughead: One theory is that Bret and Donna may have done something to him and are now framing the trio; another that the trio are taking the fall so that Jughead can pretend to be dead as part of his investigation into Stonewall Prep; and yet another theory is that the trio really do have something to do with what happened to Jughead.

The Riverdale Season 4, Episode 9 synopsis, meanwhile, reveals that the episode will introduce a new figure in the form of Jughead’s grandfather Forsythe Pendleton Jones I (Timothy Webber), whose appearance is very likely to have something to do with the mystery. Over the last few episodes, Jughead has been getting closer to the truth of a Stonewall Prep murder conspiracy covering up the real authorship of the Baxter Brothers series of books. Jughead has evidence that his grandfather wrote them, but everyone who has gotten close to finding this out before him has ended up dead.

The episode, however, will not be the last time we see Stonewall Prep. Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has hinted that the first episode of Riverdale in 2020 will see the the Stonewall Stags take on the Riverdale High School team in a football game, suggesting that, after Bret accuses Archie of having killed Jughead, there is some tension between them that is worked out on the field.

However, Jughead’s life is not the only one in danger in Riverdale Season 4, Episode 9, titled “Tangerine.” In the trailer for the episode, we see Betty threatened with a knife by her mother Alice (Madchen Amick). One dead person who will finally get peace, however, is Jason Blossom (Trevor Stones), with the episode reportedly seeing Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) finally giving his corpse a burial after weeks of it turning up in creepy places in the Blossom manor.

At San Diego Comic Con, Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that the midseason closer would show the events that directly led up to the Season 3 finale, meaning we’ll know exactly why Archie, Betty and Veronica found themselves covered in blood.

The full synopsis for “Tangerine” reads: “After declaring war on Hiram (Mark Consuelos), Veronica (Camila Mendes) enlists a secret weapon against her father – her Abuelita (guest star Ana Mercedes).

“Archie (KJ Apa) and FP (Skeet Ulrich) team up to take Dodger (guest star Juan Riedinger) down for good, while Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Charles (guest star Wyatt Nash) investigate a series of strange attacks aimed at Betty. Elsewhere, Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) search for his grandpa, Forsythe Pendleton Jones I (guest star Timothy Webber), leads to more questions than answers, while Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) finally makes peace with the past that’s been haunting her.”

Riverdale Season 4, Episode 9 airs December 11 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
