A teaser clip from slasher remake The Strangers: Chapter 1 sees Riverdale actress Madelaine Petsch in deep trouble.
Over the course of two minutes and 26 seconds, we see her character Maya getting increasingly freaked out by a persistent visitor to her front door. Shrouded in darkness through the spy hole, they keep asking, “Is Tamara here?”
With Maya’s attention fixed on the door, which could smash off its hinges any second, another assailant flashes past the camera right behind her.
The narrative centres on Maya and her fiancé Ryan (Cruel Summer’s Froy Gutierrez), who hunker down in a woodland rental only to be preyed upon by a savage group of masked strangers.
Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman starred in the original horror The Strangers, which came out 15 years ago.
Addressing the reboot, which hopes to kick off a new trilogy, producer Courtney Solomon previously shared in a statement: “When setting out to remake The Strangers, we felt there was a bigger story to be told, which could be as powerful, chilling, and terrifying as the original and could really expand that world.
“Shooting this story as a trilogy allows us to create a hyperreal and terrifying character study. We’re fortunate to be joining forces with Madelaine Petsch, an amazing talent whose character is the driving force of this story.”
Director Renny Harlin added: “It is only fitting that I get to return to my favourite genre with the incredibly well-written trilogy of The Strangers. The characters and the storyline are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of haunting visuals in bringing these movies alive.”
The Strangers: Chapter 1 comes to cinemas next year.
