Sam Heughan has put his full support behind the Outlander prequel series focusing on Jamie Fraser’s parents.
The Balmaclellan-born actor, 43, has played Jamie in the hit series based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels since 2013 but has put his weight behind the prequel Outlander: Blood of my Blood. The prequel series was greenlit in early 2023, with the bittersweet news that Outlander would be coming to an end after its eighth season.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood will tell the story of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian and Ellen, and how they fell in love before Jamie, his brother William and his sister Jenny were born. Speaking to Radio Times, the Scots actor spoke highly of the ‘legacy’ Outlander has created and gushed over the soon to be series.
Speaking to the publication, he said: “Yeah, they’ve commissioned Blood of My Blood, about Jamie’s parents. I guess it’s a legacy, right? It’s what we’ve created. When we first went to Scotland and we created the studio where we shoot Outlander, there was nothing there and now it’s this huge facility.
“It’s created so many jobs in Scotland, so many people have been employed. I’m sure the new show will be just as successful, if not more so.”
Fans will be heartbroken to say goodbye to Sam and his beloved character. When asked if he would consider appearing for a cameo as Jamie in the new series, he said “never say no” but added “it could be pretty difficult as it’s about Jamie’s parents when they’re young”.
In an announcement about the new series, showrunner Matthew B Roberts said: “Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore to what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain.”
“The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire, and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognise.
He continued: “Jamie and Claire’s TV story may be coming to an end with Season 8, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on book 10.”
“With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the Outlander universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans.”
