Shrek 5 has had its release date pushed back to December 2026, it has been confirmed.

Universal Pictures, which owns DreamWorks Animation and Illumination, announced (via Variety) that the fifth outing for the grumpy ogre and his fairytale friends has been delayed from July 1 to December 23.

Meanwhile, Minions 3 has been moved up from June 30, 2027 to replace Shrek 5’s initial spot. That’s a year earlier than first announced.

Another currently untitled Illumination project has been slightly pushed back from March 19 to fill in the vacant June 30, 2027 date, giving the studio an animated summer tentpole release.

It has also been confirmed that Shrek 5 has gained a second director.

Originally, Walt Dohrn – who has worked in the story department for previous Shrek films and voiced Rumpelstiltskin – was the sole director, but now Conrad Vernon – co-director on Shrek 2 and the voice of The Gingerbread Man – has also come on board.

We don’t know much about the plot of Shrek 5, although the end of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish saw Puss and his friends Kitty Softpaws and Perrito travelling to Far Far Away.

Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are back as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, respectively, while Murphy has stated that a Donkey spin-off is in the works too.

The four Shrek films so far have made $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office, while the two Puss in Boots films have made around another $1 billion.

There’s also a stage show, plus a whole host of video games, TV shows, and other merchandise released over the years.
