Squid Game star Jo Yu-ri shared her reaction to fan theories about the highly-anticipated third and final season of the hit Netflix series. Jo was first introduced in Season 2 as Kim Jun-hee/Player 222, a young pregnant woman who joins the survival competition in hopes of winning the money to start a new life with her baby.
During a recent interview with Cinema Today, Jo revealed that most of the circulating fan theories about Squid Game Season 3 haven’t gotten close to what they really have in store for viewers. She teased fans to expect a much more “brutal and cruel” storyline for the remaining characters of the show. “It seems like a lot of people have been predicting the contents of Season 3, but it seems like not many of them have gotten it right as I thought,” Jo said. “A truly unimaginably brutal and cruel story awaits, so please look forward to it.” Prior to landing a major role in Squid Game Season 2, Jo first made her acting debut in the 2022 web series Mimicus. She was also a part of K-Pop girl group Iz*One, which was formed through the popular reality competition show Produce 48 in 2018.
Squid Game hails from Emmy winner Hwang Dong-hyuk, who serves as a writer, director, and executive producer. The series is led by Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as In-ho/ The Front Man, and Wi Ha-joon as Jun-ho, who was first introduced during the first installment. Joining them in the second season are Park Sung-hoon as Hyun-ju/ Player 120, Yim Si-wan as Myung-gi/ Player 333, Yang Dong-geun as Yong-sik/Player 007, Kang Ae-sim as Geum-ja/Player 149, Lee Seo-hwan as Jung-bae/ Player 390, Kang Ha-neul as Dae-ho/ Player 388, Lee Jin-uk as Gyeong-seok/Player 246, Choi Seung-hyun as Thanos/ Player 230, and more.
What to Expect From Squid Game Season 3?
According to Hwang, Gi-hun will show another side of him in the final chapter, as he deals with the heartbreaking aftermath of losing his best friend at the end of the Season 2 finale. “For the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist?,” he said. “So you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
Despite the global hit show’s impending conclusion, Hwang believes that the Squid Game universe will continue to expand even after the original show wraps, teasing his potential role in Netflix’s plans for the future of the franchise. “I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away,” he shared in a previous interview. “Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe.” Since making its debut in 2021, the show has broken multiple streaming records for Netflix, including becoming its most-watched series to date.
Squid Game Season 3 is expected to premiere sometime this year.
