The hit South Korean series Squid Game has returned for a second season and is already breaking Netflix records.
The survival drama will conclude its main storyline with its third season, slated for release in 2025.
However, the show’s universe is far from finished, as creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed plans for multiple spin-off projects.
Since its 2021 debut, Squid Game has become Netflix’s most-watched series, drawing global audiences with its gripping tale of contestants risking their lives in brutal games for a massive cash prize.
The second season, which premiered on December 26, 2024, follows protagonist Seong Gi-hun as he rejoins the deadly competition in a bid to take down the sinister organization behind it.
Squid Game Season 3, essentially a continuation of Season 2, will wrap up the story of Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae.
It’s unclear if Lee will participate in future Squid Game projects beyond this season. The actor has already made history with the show, becoming the first Asian to win an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has promised a definitive ending to Gi-hun’s story in Season 3, saying, “I felt that through this story, I could express everything I wanted, both through Squid Game and Gi-hun’s character.”
Even as the main series concludes, the Squid Game franchise will continue to grow.
Dong-hyuk said in an interview with The Wrap, “I know Netflix has a plan [for more Squid Game]. They are not going to throw this idea away.”
One of these expansions is Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition series inspired by the original show. Premiering in November 2024, it features players competing in game-inspired challenges—minus the life-or-death stakes.
The series has been renewed for a second season due to its strong viewer response.
In addition, an English-language adaptation is reportedly in the works, with celebrated director David Fincher potentially attached to the project.
While details are limited, this adaptation shows Netflix’s efforts to explore new directions for the franchise.
Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix, and Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in 2025.
