Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae has landed the lead role in the new Star Wars TV series, The Acolyte.
The star of the 2021 Netflix hit joins Dear Evan Hansen’s Amandla Stenberg and Anne Boleyn’s Jodie Turner-Smith in the new Disney+ show, according to Deadline.
The show will be the actor’s first major role since Squid Game became one of Netflix’s biggest ever shows last year, and with the new role being in one of the biggest movie and TV franchises, it looks like a great move for him.
tar Wars: The Acolyte has been billed as a mystery-thriller set about a century before The Phantom Menace, in the final days of the High Republic era when the Jedi were at the peak of their power.
Lee’s role in the show is being kept under wraps with no hints from Lucasfilm as to who he might be portraying.
Meanwhile, showrunner Leslye Headland previously explained why it would be impossible for her queerness not to be reflected in the series itself.
“In the same way that the original Star Wars film, A New Hope, is about a young man living in Modesto, California, who doesn’t want to take over his dad’s hardware store… there’s just no way that me being a queer woman is not going to be reflected in my work,” she said.
“I could try not to do it, but why would I? It just feels like a natural extension of what I do.”
