David Harbour has been stressing out his fans left, right and centre since his ambiguous exit from Stranger Things – and his latest Instagram post did nothing to ease tension. Although it’s not quite what many of them think it is…

Following Hopper’s pivotal role in the show’s season three finale, many viewers are at odds over his future in Hawkins. Did the closing of the Gate kill the beloved chief of police? Is he trapped in the Upside Down? Or is he, as is most likely, the Russians’ mysterious captive ‘American’?

Unfortunately, no-one really knows what Hopper is up to at the moment, and David is clearly enjoying keeping his fans guessing.

Hopper, Stranger Things

In a seemingly cryptic post, David shared a photo of him embracing a headless mannequin, which included a mysterious farewell to a “big bold bright burly hope of Russia”.

“Goodbye long, scraggly, surprisingly soft, Walt Whitman beard. Adieu beige hotel room. Goodnight sweet strange mannequin i never knew what to do with in the corner of the room,” he wrote. “Farewell Alexi, you big bold bright burly hope of russia, you complicated tortured soul, you guardian of the red.”

Fans took no time in admitting their confusion over David’s post, with one claiming: “These are confusing times.” Another agreed: “YOURE SO CONFUSING STOP IT RN.”

A closer look at the post, however, reveals there is no need for any confusion. Rather than bidding farewell to a captured Hopper in Russia, David Harbour was simply marking the end of his time filming for Marvel’s Black Widow movie, where he plays Alexei Shostakov, aka the Red Guardian.

This isn’t the first time David Harbour has teased Stranger Things fans – earlier this year, he revealed that he already knows how the cult sci-fi series will end.
