The fifteenth and final season of Supernatural was underwhelming, leaving many fans unsatisfied with the conclusion of this long-running show. Though there has been talk of a revival, despite the show only concluding in 2020, there’s no official news suggesting it will get another season in the near future. However, the possibility is circulating and making viewers wonder what a revival would look like.
The creators of a Supernatural reboot would have to consider the prominent demises in the conclusion, including main characters Sam and Dean Winchester. This isn’t a barrier to a revival, especially since the characters have had several unlikely revivals throughout the years. If the story arc can explain why the main characters are back in action, even if their conclusions are inevitably the same, many possible storylines can revitalize the beloved fantasy series.
Return of Classic Monsters
Putting aside the Winchesters’ epic battles to protect the world, save humankind, and defeat a great evil, the show is beloved for the original concept of monster hunters. Demons may have always been a prominent influence on the show since the Yellow-Eyed Demon’s plot directly caused the Winchesters to become hunters, but it was the Monster-of-the-Week specials that pulled in the dedicated fanbase.
Dozens of great plots could revive Sam and Dean’s storyline. However, dedicated fans loved the lore and legends of the show over various overarching plots. Supernatural was defined by the scary aspects, including ghosts, vampires, werewolves, skinwalkers, and ghouls. Instead of developing another major fight against evil, a revival would be excellent simply for continuing to use mythology and creatures of legend as an incentive for the Winchesters to get back into the action of the dangerous underworld.
Lisa and Ben Reunite With Dean
The conclusion to Dean Winchester’s storyline is one of the most controversial aspects of Supernatural’s finale. Though living and dying as a hunter defined his characterization, viewers wanted to see Dean have the happy ending he deserved. The possibility of him having a sense of normalcy and happiness was teased when he spent a year with Lisa and Ben in Season 6.
The show seemed to erase this intriguing and mundane aspect when Lisa and Ben forgot about their time with Dean. However, that didn’t stop fans from wondering what could have been and hoping Dean would be reunited with his chosen family. Depending on how the revival chooses to continue the Winchesters’ plot, considering they both died in the finale, there is potential for Dean to finally reconnect with his love interest and surrogate son.
The Wayward Sisters
The “Wayward Sisters” consisted of Sheriff Donna Hanscum, Sheriff Jody Mills, and a group of young women, including Jody’s adoptive daughters Claire and Alex, witch Patience, and dream walker Kaia Nieves. These women had some of the best Supernatural story arcs and are beloved by the fandom.
This episode was one of the few that was intended to kick-start a spin-off. However, the show was canceled before fruition, despite the protests of the fanbase. These characters also didn’t have a particularly thrilling conclusion and were largely overlooked in the final season. A revival would be an opportunity to build on this single-episode Wayward Sisters arc. Perhaps this storyline receiving more attention could lead to a successful spin-off series, highlighting the popular female characters that previously didn’t get enough attention.
An Organized Network of Hunters
Aside from the corrupt Men of Letters, there was a disorganized group of hunters in the United States. Sam and Dean were often seen talking about other hunters and the cases they worked on. There were also a few other prominent characters who were hunters, including Bobby’s long-time buddy Rufus.
Though these different hunters occasionally met in large groups when there was a particularly dangerous threat, they’re known for working alone. For a revival of Supernatural, it would be interesting to see how hunters might change the world if they started organizing and working in larger groups.
A Continuation of the “Bloodlines” Plot
In the episode “Bloodlines,” Sam and Dean learn there are two organized groups of monsters controlling the dark underworld of Chicago. These two groups are run by powerful families that are feuding, one of the shapeshifters and the other werewolves. Unlike the shapeshifters and werewolves the Winchesters had encountered previously, these monsters had familial roots and ties to the community.
This episode was also a failed spin-off debut that had a lot of potential if given the chance to shine. In the single installment of this story arc, there was a great deal of action and drama. Unlike the ups and downs Supernatural’s plot, “Bloodlines” has the potential to widen the scope of this universe and expand on the complexities of these so-called “monsters.”
The Return of Jesse Turner
This was another single episode of Supernatural that had the opportunity to be developed into an epic plotline. The introduction of a powerful half-demon boy, Jesse, who is destined to be the “Anti-Christ,” was an astonishing and intriguing plotline, but the show seemed to forget about him after his disappearance in the episode’s finale.
Before Jack the Nephilim, Jesse was the most powerful being the Winchesters had ever encountered aside from God himself. Viewers were frustrated that, despite his abilities and possibilities, Jesse was never seen or heard from again. In a revival, a grown-up Jesse could prove to be an epic ally or a series-changing enemy.
Rowena Ruling Hell
Rowena, despite being a villain at the beginning, is one of the most popular Supernatural characters. She had a heartbreaking demise, sacrificing herself to save the world. However, it was later revealed that after she died, she became the new monarch of Hell, ruling after her demon son, Crowley.
Though the powerful witch had her faults and was prone to selfishness, it seems like a positive thing that Rowena became the Queen of Hell. A mix of her ambition and subtly caring personality would make for an interesting revolution in Hell. If the show has a revival, Rowena’s reign cannot be overlooked or ignored.
Sam Winchester’s Family Must Return
After the death of Dean Winchester, Sam went on to seemingly live a normal life. The show revealed that he ended up getting married and having a child, dying peacefully as an old man. However, this felt like a cheap overview of Sam’s many years of living a mundane life.
A revival could likely have to work with this storyline or restructure it, bringing Sam and Dean back with their later years yet to unfold. This reality of how a revival could reasonably unravel doesn’t stop fans from having questions about Sam’s future. If the series slows down and highlights some of his milestones, it would be satisfying to know who Sam marries and how his child turns out.
Castiel’s Return From The Empty
As arguably the best character in Supernatural, Castiel had one of the most disappointing conclusions. When Dean is in danger of being killed by Death, Castiel sacrifices himself and is sucked into The Empty, an afterlife for angels void of anything. Though he achieved absolute happiness before his departure, fans were not satisfied with this send-off.
If the original cast comes back for Season 16, Castiel’s final scene cannot be ignored. Instead of bringing him back simply to serve as an ally and member of Sam and Dean’s found family, the revival could feature a plot that centers on Castiel and his return from The Empty.
Jack’s New Almighty Status
Jack was a controversial addition to the Supernatural universe, but he did have one of the most interesting conclusions in the entire cast. After he replaces Chuck as God, he begins to restore balance to the world, including bringing back the people that Chuck smote in Season 15.
In a revival, Jack could play an important role in the continuation of the series. The series would have to consider Jack’s influence and how the world has changed since he took over the role of the Almighty. In addition, Jack could be a key player if the show backtracked and explored other aspects of Sam and Dean’s storylines before they died in the Series Finale.
