HBO has released the trailer for The Last of Us season 2.
The TV adaptation of the PlayStation zombie series is returning for its second run next month, and this new footage teases a little bit of what to expect.
The trailer gives us glimpses of Ellie’s romance with Dina, an infected attack in the snow, and two new factions of human enemies.
There’s also a shot of a flamethrower and a brief glimpse of new character Abby.
However, the main focus here is how Ellie learns the truth about what Joel did at the end of season 1 in the hospital and lied to her about it.
Bella Ramsey performs the moment with a sense of tranquil fury, while Pedro Pascal’s silent reaction lets the guilt in his eyes do all the work.
Season 2 will only have seven episodes compared to season 1’s nine. Showrunner Craig Mazin explained: “The story material that we got from Part 2 of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons.
“When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the [natural] breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
A third season hasn’t been officially confirmed, but given Mazin’s comments and the structure of the source material, it seems like season 3 is part of the plan.
