The Witcher Season 2 is still approximately two months away from wrapping production after several delays. While filming continues, information continues to spill from the set in the United Kingdom.
Redanian Intelligence reported that three actors joined the upcoming season, one of which is Edward Rowe, who has been cast as King Henselt, the warmongering king of Kaedwen, introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves. The novels describe the king as being somewhat inept at court, but masterful when it comes to matters of war. Rowe is set to appear in at least two episodes, both of which are being directed by Ed Bazalgette.
Additionally, Season 2 of The Witcher will feature appearances by actors Ed Birch and Julie Barclay, the latter of which is known for her performances on Broadchurch and Coronation Street. Their roles in The Witcher have not yet been determined. However, it is known that Birch will appear in two episodes and that Barclay, at the time of writing, has not yet filmed her scenes.
Several rulers from the Northern Kingdoms have now been cast for Season 2, including Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia, who will be played by Rebecca Hanssen. As the upcoming season will adapt Blood of Elves, it is likely that the Netflix series will feature more monarchs from across the Northern Kingdoms, as one of the major events in the novels is the meeting at Hagge castle, during which the rulers discussed the war against Nilfgaard and the fate of Princess Cirilla, who, to them, had gone missing. The major rulers in the novels not yet revealed for the Netflix series include King Demavend III of Aedirn, who had a tenuous relationship with Henselt; and King Vizimir of Redania.
Netflix’s The Witcher premiered in December 2019. While it received mixed reviews from critics, the fantasy series proved to be widely popular among regular audiences. The series went on to become one of Netflix’s most successful series. As a result, several spinoff projects are currently in development, such as The Witcher: Blood Origin, which will explore the history of the Continent; and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an anime tie-in film centered on the youth of Geralt of Rivia’s mentor– Vesemir.
The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
