The Witcher spoilers follow.
The Witcher season 3 is now shooting, with Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan pictured in a winter wonderland between takes.
Premiering on Netflix last December, season 2 was labelled a “resounding success” by Digital Spy in our review, so it’s no surprise to see everyone back on set in full medieval clobber.
The show’s Twitter account posted the new photo yesterday (April 4), which you can check out below, including an official synopsis for the upcoming season.
“As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” it teased.
“Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”
In an additional Netflix announcement, it’s also been confirmed that Loni Peristere (American Horror Story), Bola Ogun (Lucifer), Stephen Surjik (The Umbrella Academy) and Gandja Monteiro (Brand New Cherry Flavour) are all on directing duties this season.
It’ll be interesting to see whether or not showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich sticks to her word when the third season drops, after previously suggesting it’ll resolve some issues posed by fans in light of Eskel’s shocking death.
“I want to assure them I hear them, they’re not screaming into a void,” she tweeted in response.
“But I don’t have time — or shouldn’t take THIS time — to get into a long debate on why Eskel died, or when G/Y/C will bond. (Psst S3).”
The Witcher seasons 1-2 are now streaming on Netflix.
