The third season of Netflix’s The Witcher is many months away, while having finished production just recently. Therefore, this will be a period of drought for us who eagerly wait for the next season of the Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan series. Nevertheless, we will inevitably continue to learn new things before Season 3 is released.
New season, new Crach
In the first season of The Witcher, Crach an Craite was portrayed by Scottish actor Blair Kincaid. He appeared in one episode, which adapted Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story A Question of Price that deals with Duny, Pavetta and the Law of Surprise at Calanthe’s banquet.
We have learned that Crach will return in Season 3, but he will no longer be played by Kincaid. Instead, the character will now be portrayed by Icelandic actor Johannes Haukur Johannesson, who is known by his roles in such series as Vikings: Valhalla, The Last Kingdom and Game of Thrones.
It is unclear why this change was made, but in most cases similar to this one it’s usually a scheduling conflict. It is also unclear in which capacity will we see Crach in Season 3.
In the books, many years after the banquet, he reappears to the reader in person when he gets involved in a Yennefer storyline in Skellige. That, however, is some time after the events of Thanedd and at least a few scenes must happen between the Thanedd coup and Yennefer’s Skellige arc. That said, we could see Crach in different circumstances, unrelated to what we know from the books.
Other recastings in The Witcher Season 3
Johannesson taking over the role of Crach an Craite wouldn’t be a first in Season 3 of The Witcher. As you remember, Sam Woolf took over the role of the pyro villain Rience in the new season. At the time we didn’t know why, but later we found out that Chris Fulton, who played Rience in The Witcher Season 2, joined Outlander Season 7, also as a recurring antagonist.
Additionally, we have suspicions that Lorna Brown may have replaced Josette Simon as the dryad queen Eithne in The Witcher Season 3. But in this case, these are only suspicions and we don’t have any solid evidence yet.
Season 3 of The Witcher is in post-production for a Summer 2023 release.
