Jensen Ackles reunited with his longtime Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki to direct an upcoming episode of Walker, and the show’s crew took the opportunity to have some fun with him on set.
In a series of photos posted as a story on his Instagram, Ackles showed the way his director’s chair changed over the course of five days of shooting. On Day 1 he was given a chair that said “Dean Winchester,” the name of his Supernatural character. The picture of Day 2’s chair showed the name “Soldier Boy,” the supe that Ackles will be playing in the third season of The Boys.
Each consecutive photo in the series featured a different chair with another alias for Ackles. The third, which he captioned, “This is ridiculous,” uses the names of his parents to label him “Alan & Donna’s Son,” and the fifth day’s chair is labeled “Red Hood,” the voice role that he played in DC’s 2010 animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood. Since Ackles revealed that he’s involved in a mystery project with Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti, some fans have been hoping that he’ll reprise Red Hood in live action.
Ackles was finally given a director’s chair with his own name in the final day of shooting for Walker, but at that point he added a note to the photo saying, “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Ackles played Dean Winchester, one of the two leads on The WB/The CW’s Supernatural, for all 15 seasons that the show was on the air. Padalecki, who played Dean’s younger brother Sam, now stars as the eponymous Texas Ranger in Walker, a reimagining of CBS’s classic action drama.
After the hit urban fantasy series concluded in 2020, Ackles and Padalecki both kept their acting careers going strong and maintained their brotherly friendship. Ackles’ Soldier Boy will appear in the upcoming third season of The Boys, Supernatural creator Eric Kripke’s live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s violently satirical superhero comic, which is slated to premiere on Prime Video this year on Friday, June 3. Ackles is also co-developing a Supernatural spinoff/prequel series titled The Winchesters, in which he will narrate the show in character as Dean.
Developed for television by Anna Fricke, Walker airs Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Jensen Ackles’ episode is the seventh in the second season.
