Spoiler warning for Peaky Blinders season 5

The plot from Tommy Shelby ( Cillian Murphy ) to murder his rival Sir Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) came to an abrupt end thanks to a mysterious betrayal in the Peaky Blinders season five finale.

With would-be assassin Barney (Cosmo Jarvis) shot dead and Aberama Gold ( Aidan Gillen ) stabbed before he could exact revenge on Jimmy McGavern (Brian Gleeson) for killing his son, it really ended in utter failure for the leading man of Peaky Blinders.

But who was one responsible for the failure of the Mosley assassination plot?

One bizarre fan theory is convinced that another resurrection is on the cards following the return of Alfie Solomons ( Tom Hardy ) – and that old Shelby antagonist Major Campbell thwarted Tommy’s plan.

One fan on Twitter wrote: “I think I’m in shock!! I mean I knew Mosley wasn’t killed in 1929 but never saw any of that coming!! Thinking now Major Campbell is behind it but he is dead!!”

Long-term fans will remember that Major Campbell ( Sam Neill ) was the chief antagonist of the first two seasons of the show before he was finally killed by Polly Gray ( Helen McCrory ) after he wronged the Shelby clan once too often.

Campbell’s death was referenced earlier in season 5 by a journalist that was later murdered.

Could Campbell make a shock comeback? We doubt it, but stranger things have happened on Peaky Blinders.

Even if he isn’t still alive, he could always make an hallucinatory appearance akin to Grace Shelby (Annabelle Wallis) in season 5.

Maybe they can laugh about old times and how she shot him once.

Peaky Blinders will return for season 6.
