You star Charlotte Ritchie has teased a mystery romance in Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) life in the upcoming fourth season of the show.
The actress – who is also due to return to our screens in the BBC’s Ghosts – will join the Netflix thriller in the role of Kate, who appears to be the latest object of the killer’s affections after they were seen in a filming picture embracing and leaning in for a kiss.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Ritchie said of her character: “Well, I don’t know how much I can say about whether I’m the object of his affection or not.”
She further teased of the scene in question: “It was a dream sequence! [laughs]… Or was it?! It’s an interesting one because it doesn’t start that way.
“They’re not into each other. It’s not like a sort of… that’s quite a later development in their story. But she’s basically extremely suspicious of him and really doesn’t like him at the beginning.
“It is a bit like she can sort of see through him, which was great to play because he’s such a horrible person. Even though Penn is the loveliest person!”
Badgley has said that he doesn’t want his character’s story to be seen as a love story, Ritchie noting of a possible romance: “He’s a total creep, but he’s also very seductive.
“So you’d be forgiven for being like: ‘Oh, there’s a kind of romantic element to this’, but then the truth is, it’s not romantic, and that’s the kind of stuff that gets mistaken for romance. But it’s actually just like, really, really horrible and toxic.”
The star went on to confirm there are elements of that in season 4, though added that her character “is extremely flawed”.
“So if she happens to fall for a guy like that, more fool her,” Ritchie added.
You seasons 1-3 are streaming on Netflix. Season 4 is in production.
