The planned Walker spin-off series has been given an update, with the prequel show moving to the pilot stage.

Walker: Independence was first announced to be in development last year, taking things back to the 1800s and focusing on character Abby Walker, who is linked to Supernatural star Jared Padalecki’s character from the main show.

Network The CW has now confirmed that the show has been given a pilot order, meaning fans will get a chance to explore the wider Walker universe.

According to the synopsis, Abby is “an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West”.

She then sets out on a quest for revenge, where she meets with loveable rogue Hoyt Rawlins, who is himself searching for a purpose.

They arrive at Independence, Texas, encountering diverse and eclectic residents who are chasing their own dreams and running from their troubled pasts. Together, they struggle with the changing world around them, and become agents of change themselves.

The main Walker series is itself a reboot of the 1990s show Walker, Texas Ranger, with Padalecki playing the titular Ranger Cordell Walker.

The show also focuses on characters Abeline Walker (Molly Hagan), Liam Walker (Keegan Allen) and Cordell’s best friend Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr)

Meanwhile, on the topic of The CW orders, the network has also given the greenlight for a Supernatural prequel series called The Winchesters, which is being produced by Padelecki’s co-star Jensen Ackles.

The series caused a bit of controversy when Padalecki admitted that he wasn’t aware of the project before it went public, though he and Ackles later talked things through.

Walker airs on The CW in the US.
