Deadline reports that the actor, who plays affable detective Charles Boyle on the NBC comedy series, will star as US Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the TV adaptation of former FBI director James Comey’s non-fiction book A Higher Loyalty.

Joe will star alongside Holly Hunter (as Acting Attorney General Sally Yates) and Harry Potter star Brendan Gleeson (who will play President Donald Trump) in the CBS Studios miniseries, as well as The OA star Kingsley Ben-Adir (as Barack Obama).

Now that’s an impressive line-up.

Jeff Sessions

A Higher Loyalty details Comey’s tenure as the FBI director, at a time when there was a high-profile investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails as well as allegations of links between the Trump campaign and Russia. Comey’s account also delves into his firing by Trump in 2017.

Elsewhere, Damon Gupton is playing former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, Michael Hyatt is taking on former US Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and Spencer Garrett will appear as Bill Sweeney, the assistant director in charge of the New York FBI field office.

“Johnson, Sessions, Lynch and Sweeney are real people who played real roles in this story,” said show writer Billy Ray. “It’s huge to have such strong actors playing them.”

As well as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Joe has previously starred in projects such as Superbad, Role Models, I Love You Man and How I Met Your Mother.

Now flex those serious miniseries chops, Boyle!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs on NBC in the US and E4 in the UK. Seasons 1-6 are also available on DVD now.
