Lucifer (played by Tom Ellis) was put in a somewhat sticky situation at the end of season four, when he found himself returning to Hell for eternity. It took every ounce of his will to finally move on to Hell once again, and leave Chloe Decker (Lauren German) behind. However, fans have been hard at work in theorising how he will make his triumphant return in season five.

Although it may be generally accepted Lucifer could drag himself back out of Hell in the future, things may not be that simple for him.

In fact, the devil may have found himself utterly trapped, and may need to figure out another way of getting back to Los Angeles.

Fans of the show have been hard at work in deciding how this may happen, and the latest theory surrounds season two’s God Johnson (Timothy Omundson).

Viewers will recall God Johnson appeared in a self-titled episode back in season two, which depicted him as a man with mental health issues who believed he was the deity.

Reddit user AbleCancel’s theory suggests God Johnson was in fact the real god, and he may make a return in season five.

They wrote: “Theory: God Johnson, from S2E16, a psychiatric patient who thought he was God, was indeed possessed by God (in a similar way that Charlotte Richards was possessed by Goddess).

“But he just didn’t reveal that to Lucifer, letting everyone think he had just temporarily gone insane while wearing the Medallion of Life (Belt).”

They ominously concluded by adding: “In season five, this may be revealed.”

The return of God Johnson could spell either fortune or terror for Lucifer, as he currently finds himself at his mercy.

On one hand, God could indeed help him escape from Hell in order to return to Los Angeles, and indeed Chloe.

On the other, he may be pitted against god in the upcoming episodes, who may not want the devil to return to Earth.

Either way, God’s involvement in the final season would certainly shake things up a bit.

Meanwhile, the stars of the show recently dropped some hints about what is to come for the show in the coming episodes.

Chloe star Lauren told Entertainment Tonight her character would not be in a good way in the opening of season five.

She explained: “Season five picks up… Chloe is heartbroken but she’s trying to almost play it cool more or less with Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt).

“They’re going out, drinking a lot, they are dancing.

“But also, Maze is helping her as a bounty hunter at the LAPD.

“Chloe has no idea where Lucifer is. She’s heartbroken but has no idea how to show it.”

Could Chloe find herself in some sort of trouble, forcing Lucifer to step in and save her?

Lucifer season 5 is coming to Netflix in 2020.
