Legacies showrunner Brett Matthews revealed his reaction to Legacies’ upcoming musical episode in Season 3, calling it “hugely emotional.”
Legacies producer Brett Matthews shares what it was like creating the series’ upcoming musical episode, deeming it a love letter to both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
“Salvatore: The Musical!” episode will likely premiere in Season 3, according to an interview with Matthews by TV Insider. “It’s hugely emotional in terms of the story it’s telling but also for us hugely emotional in just getting to revisit those characters,” he shared.
“We were sending pictures to cast members from the old shows and seeing their reactions,” the showrunner shared. “It really was a beautiful walk down memory lane. This show would literally not exist without the other shows. It was fun to explore that connection onscreen.”
Matthews added that it was moving for him as well as Legacies’ show creator Julie Plec. “It really is [honoring both shows]. Julie [Plec] and I worked together on The Vampire Diaries for so long, and that show just holds this very special place in our hearts. To go back and to revisit that world and those characters, that whole episode really is a love letter [to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals] brought to life by writer Thomas Brandon. To relive some of those storylines and characters that are the literal legacy behind Legacies was just the most fun ever. We’re lucky Legacies is a weird enough show to support us doing something like that.”
Originally, the series’ musical episode was set to debut as the 19th episode of Season 2. However, its release was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Show creator Julie Plec spoke of its delay and enthusiasm for its release, noting, “If we don’t eventually complete and air the musical episode I will (metaphorically, not literally) die.”
