Lucifer star Tom Ellis reveals the Devil’s deepest desire

Lucifer’s Tom Ellis shared what’s number one on his character’s bucket list.

Ellis shared that the devilish detective would have several things to do on their bucket list, but the “number one would be to actually get drunk,” during a live Q&A on StageIt.

“We always played him that he just can’t quite get drunk,” Ellis added. “Because, he’s got this kind of like, celestial kind of sobriety that’s stopping him even though he gives it a good go. So there we go. That’s on his bucket list, to actually properly get drunk one day.”

The Lucifer-starring actor also shared that his current number one goal on his personal bucket list is “to get vaccinated” against the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the Devil has tried several times to drink himself under the table after a tragedy strikes — like after he kills his brother Uriel or his ex-girlfriend Eve sends his life into upheaval — and is always seen drinking whiskey from a flash, he notoriously cannot get drunk.

Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson revealed in February that the Devil will be facing more problems he’s tried to avoid — namely, his father — in Season 5b. Henderson shared that a large part of the second half of the show’s fifth season will revolve around Lucifer confronting his identity as “the wayward son.” He added that Lucifer and his brother Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) will have “wildly different perspectives on the arrival [on Earth] of their father.”

When asked how exactly God’s arrival will affect Lucifer, Henderson shared, “So much of Lucifer’s relationship with God is about this distance.” He added that casting Dennis Haysbert as God allowed the show to embrace a “warmth” in its portrayal of Lucifer’s dead-old-dad.

“[Haysbert] plays against the type you’d expect, but also leans into sort of the fatherly energy that he gives,” he added. “He has that presence of the Father that you don’t want to disappoint… But also probably could get angry at you at a moment’s notice… And it opens up Lucifer in ways he has chosen to close off previously.”

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. The first half of Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
