The highly anticipated sixth season of Outlander is set to return to our screens in early 2022, leaving fans with little time to speculate on theories for the upcoming premiere.

Both Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe will be back as Jamie and Claire Fraser, taking viewers along on the journey of their epic love story.

However, with some time to kill between the seasons it hasn’t stopped fans revisiting old episodes – specifically taking to social media in a bid to solve the mystery of Jamie’s ghost in season one.

During the first season, Claire was introduced as a nurse tending to those injured from the war and was at the time married to Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), and the two had visited Scotland for their honeymoon.

It was going blissfully until she discovered some mysterious stones which transported her 202 years into the past.

While the scene was shocking enough, viewers saw Frank spot a ghost staring at Claire through a window.

As Outlander progressed, many viewers believed the ghostly figure belonged to Jamie, which would make sense, however, this took place before Claire and Jamie even met.

In the episode, when Frank returns to the room, Claire says: “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

To which he responded: “I’m not all sure that I haven’t.”

While the theory has never been debunked by showrunners or the author of the bestselling novels, Diana Gabaldon – many have taken it upon themselves to work out if it was truly Jamie.

Reddit user Brilliant0ne, took to the platform to share their own theory: “I don’t know DG’s beliefs on theories about ghosts and energies and stuff like that so she could totally take it in a different direction.

“At first, I thought it was probably astral projection but with astral projection, you usually have to be kind of specific in your intentions of what you wanna see or where you want to go.

“So, it’s plausible that maybe Jamie’s intentions could have been, ‘See Claire in the future.’ “However, while DG doesn’t give EVERYTHING away, she writes in a way that makes me think when Jamie explains to Claire he saw her in his dream writing at a desk, etc., that she would’ve had him add something like, “I dunno, I set my mind to wanting to see you and I did,” the viewer explained.

Strangely enough, Claire and Frank’s visit to Inverness coincides with the Samhain Festival, a Celtic celebration on which the barrier between the living and the dead is thinnest.

The appearance of Jamie’s ghost could’ve also been a near-death Astral projection, which suggests his soul left his body temporarily.

Although Jamie’s death at Culloden took place in another timeline, this could’ve allowed Claire to travel back and save him in this one.

Another user Ipiripinapa agreed with the theory and added: “Also Jamie gives us some hints about this at least a couple of times in the books when he tells Claire that he will wait for her after he dies, even 200 years if he has to.”

The acclaimed author Diana, caught wind of the theories and addressed them on her website.

She confirmed the ghost was in fact Jamie and disclosed all would be revealed in her final book 10.

Season six will be based on her sixth novel, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, so fans still have a while to wait before they receive the answers to their questions.

Outlander season six will premiere on Starz in March 2022.
