The upcoming prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is set to feature Lord Simon Fraser of Lovat, played by Tony Curran, who is the grandfather of Jamie Fraser, portrayed by Sam Heughan.

Lord Lovat will play a significant part in the new Starz limited series, but fans may not be aware of the complex and tense relationship he shares with Jamie. Furthermore, the show is expected to delve into the history between Lord Lovat and his son, Brian, played by Jamie Roy.

As the premiere of the new Starz drama approaches, let’s take a closer look at what we know about Lord Lovat and his strained relationship with his grandson from Outlander.

A glimpse into Jamie Fraser’s complicated past with Lord Lovat, reports the Irish Star.

Inside Jamie Fraser’s bitter relationship with Lord Lovat
In season two of Outlander, Jamie and Claire Fraser, played by Caitríona Balfe, met with Lord Lovat, portrayed by Clive Russell, as they attempted to persuade him to join the Jacobite cause.

However, Jenny Fraser, played by Laura Donnelly, strongly advised against the meeting, warning them that Lord Lovat would only support those who could “help him line his pockets”. When Jamie insisted on meeting with him, Jenny expressed her disapproval, saying: “You’re defending the old buzzard now? Father must be birling [spinning] in his grave.”

Jenny revealed that they had only seen Lord Lovat once in their lives after their mother, Ellen MacKenzie, played by Harriet Slater, passed away, despite being their grandfather. “Father threw him out before he could cross the threshold,” she explained to a bewildered Claire.

Jamie then disclosed the shocking truth to Claire: “He tried to have our mother kidnapped and take her to the Monach Isles in order to prevent our father from marrying her.

“There was some bad blood between Lovat and the MacKenzies.”

Despite the troubled past between Lord Lovat and Jamie, the Highlander sought his assistance to save Lallybroch and ultimately Scotland.

Claire, in her narration, detailed how Lord Lovat had played both sides, showing allegiance to the English king while also supporting the exiled Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower).

She further revealed that his personal life was “just as infamous”, marked by extramarital affairs, including three marriages, two of which were “acquired by nefarious means”.

Upon their meeting, he insulted Claire, commenting on Jamie’s choice and “bound himself to a Sassenach” and declared that Jamie was indeed his “father’s son after all”.

He continued with his insults, saying: “Unless you expect the boy to have more sense choosing a wife than did the b*****d who made him.”

Jamie retorted, stating at least he didn’t resort to “rape or trickery” to secure a wife.

His misogyny became evident when he declared that enough breath had been “wasted on women”, and Claire was asked to leave the room so that Jamie and he could discuss politics.

Thus, the relationship between Jamie and his grandfather was far from cordial, and viewers can anticipate a similar dynamic between Lord Lovat and his illegitimate son Brian in Blood of My Blood.

As avid followers might be aware, Lord Lovat was an actual historical figure whose life has been intricately woven into the Outlander narrative, complete with his cunning manoeuvres and fluctuating loyalties.
