Netflix is finally giving Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fans the Archie comics crossover they’ve always wanted. Kiernan Shipka, who played the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s titular character, is moving across the Archie comics television universe to appear in season six of Riverdale.
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who was a writer and producer for both series, said in a statement (via TV Line): “We’ve been talking about having Sabrina visit Riverdale since season 1, so it’s thrilling that this is finally happening, as part of our Rivervale special event.
“It’s also perfect that she shows up to help Cheryl Blossom during her hour of greatest need. Everyone on set lost their minds – I think fans will, too. It’s really fun and special.”
Kiernan confirmed the news in a photo on Instagram of her on set in a chair that said: ‘Sabrina Spellman, Riverdale’. She captioned the post: “From Greendale to Riverdale… See [you] in Season 6.”
Season five wrapped up with its finale on Wednesday (October 6), but season six is kicking off soon, set to premiere on Tuesday, November 16. The premiere will be a massive five-episode event, titled ‘Rivervale’.
Both shows are based on the Archie comic books and were intended to be companion shows from the outset. Riverdale airs on The CW and although the network originally started developing Chilling Adventures, it was snapped up by Netflix in a straight to series order.
But there has been one low key crossover before – a pizza delivery boy called Ben Button, played by Moses Thiessen, who appeared as a guest character in both series.
Shipka will appear as Sabrina in the new season’s fourth episode, ‘The Witching Hour(s)’ to assist Cheryl with a dangerous spell.
The official description says it “may mean the difference between life and death for a beloved member of the Blossom family”.
Aguirre-Sacasa previously teased the new season as the show’s most dramatic to date. “Forces are gathering for the ultimate battle between Good and Evil as the cameras begin to roll on #Riverdale Season Six,” he wrote on Instagram.
“But who will stand on which side? And who will live, and who will die? Everything has been a prelude to this.”
Riverdale airs on The CW in the US. In the UK, you can stream via Netflix.
