One of the stars from Sex Education, Jojo Macari has recalled the time he accidentally punched former EastEnders actor Alex Ferns on set of his new Netflix show The Irregulars.
Inspired by the works of Arthur Conan Doyle, the upcoming fantasy drama takes place in Victorian London and follows a group of teenagers who work under Dr Watson in order to solve supernatural crimes. Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes (played by The Inbetweeners’ Henry Lloyd-Hughes) nabs all the credit for their hard work.
In it, Macari plays Billy, who has a bit of a run-in with Ferns’ Vic Collins at some point during its eight-episode run and during filming, he inadvertently lamped the former Trevor Morgan actor in the face.
“[It] was quite intense, and, to be honest with you, he’s not the sort of guy you want to punch in the nose. You know what I mean?” he joked to Digital Spy and other press.
“It was accidental, obviously. These things happen. But it was superb. I loved working with Alex. It was really, really great. If standing next to him was scary, I think, hopefully, that will translate down the old internet TV.”
Macari went on to say that he met Ferns for the first time at the Scottish BAFTAs and that while he may seem intimidating at first, presumably due to the fact that he played one of soap’s most notorious antagonists back in the early 2000s, “he’s actually a lovely dude”.
“He came up to me, and he gave me the strongest handshake I’ve ever had in my life. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this guy is actually genuinely kind of terrifying,'” he laughed.
“But Alex is wicked. I learned a lot from working with him, from working with someone who’s super-experienced; he really knows his way around a set.”
