Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has shared an update on the fifth season of the hit Netflix show.
The long-awaited final instalment is currently in production, with no confirmed release date in sight. However, Hawke (who plays Robin Buckley) has teased a supersized season for fans to get stuck into when it does finally land on the streaming service.
“We’re making, basically, eight movies. The episodes are very long,” she told hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, whilst appearing on the Podcrushed podcast.
The actor shared that filming is scheduled to continue throughout 2024, with the cast working for a whole year on the upcoming season. She addressed the long waits between each season’s release, which have taken around two years on average.
“They are very intense and serious about the quality of the continued writing, and so it takes a long time to write each season and a long time to shoot them.”
Elsewhere in the episode, the star described what it was like to join such an already popular show, with her character first appearing in season 3.
“It was intimidating, especially because I’m a person who loves TV. Like as a viewer, I’m almost a little embarrassed about it,” she explained.
“I often feel that when they bring in new characters in shows, I get frustrated. I like the original cast, I don’t need to follow this new plotline,” she said. “So I was worried about people feeling about my character that way, on such a beloved show.”
Hawke explained that “The star of Strangers Things is the writing and the style,” adding that if you “exist within it, and tell the jokes, and follow the story, and care, it really holds you really well. It doesn’t leave you hanging out to dry in any way.”
