The CW has shared the long-awaited musical episode that was expected to debut during Season 2 of Legacies will now air as part of the upcoming Season 3 run.
It was previously announced that the Season 2 musical episode would be called “Salvatore: The Musical!” and would pay tribute to Legacies’ predecessor shows: The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. While the episode was initially supposed to air as Episode 19 of Season 2, it was one of four episodes that were postponed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic shutdown back in March 2020.
“Episode 19 is our grand musical episode,” executive producer Brett Matthews told TV Guide ahead of the pandemic shutdown. “We try to do a musical a year, and it’s a musical that will sort of revisit our legacies — the legacy of the show, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals universe.”
Show creator Julie Plec also tweeted at the time, “If we don’t eventually complete and air the musical episode I will (metaphorically, not literally) die. So I think we’ll be fine.” While The CW has yet to release an official air date an synopsis for the musical episode The Vampire Diaries fan wiki page claims that “Salvatore: The Musical!” will air as Episode 3 of Season 3.
This will mark the second musical episode in the Legacies series. In Season 1, Episode 11 — “We’re Gonna Need a Spotlight” — the Salvatore School students showcased their singing and dancing skills in a school talent show. That episode also found the students coming face-to-face with a unicorn, which actually served as the host for an army of mind-altering parasitic slugs, and caused everyone at the school to lose their inhibitions.
Fans will recall that Legacies’ shortened Season 2 ended with Salvatore School Headmaster Alaric Saltzman trying to find a way to wake Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell) from a cursed sleep, and Landon fighting for his life after being shot by a golden arrow that’s fatal to the Phoenix. It was previously announced that Season 3 will open with the Salvatore School students participating in a field day that’s interrupted by a dark force.
The official synopsis for Season 3, Episode 1, reads,
LET THE GAMES BEGIN — In order to get a handle on some urgencies at the school, Alaric (Davis) sends the students off-campus for their first-ever field day. But when a medieval monster arrives with a challenge, the students are left scrambling to guess which one of them may be a worthy opponent.
Legacies stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, Chris Lee, Ben Levin and Leo Howard. Season 3 of Legacies premieres on Jan. 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
