The Boys turned out to be a home run for Amazon Prime Video. The mature superhero show is based on a comic series of the same name, created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
After two seasons, The Boys promises to take things up another notch. How is that even possible after the things we’ve seen? Well, anyone familiar with the comics will tell you that we haven’t seen ANYTHING yet. Show creator Eric Kripke has already given fans lots of hints (and confirmations) about what is coming in season 3.

The pandemic pushed a whole swath of movies and shows back, but The Boys is on schedule. Season two ended in the Fall of 2020, and Kripke aimed to start filming again at the top of 2021.
His wishes (and ours) came true when season three began filming promptly on February 24.
The Premiere Date
Nobody truly knows when season three will drop, but best guestimates place it at the top of 2022. I’d love to shoot for the stars and say a Fall premiere is possible, especially with all the filming that took place in the Spring. However, in reality, we won’t know when The Boys season three will drop until Amazon Prime wants us to know.
The Returning Cast
It appears that all of the main characters from season two are returning. That means Hughie (Jack Quaid), Butcher (Karl Urban), Homelander (Anthony Starr), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Kimiko, (Karen Fukuhara), Frenchie (Tomer Capon), Stormfront (Aya Cash), A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), The Deep (Chace Crawford) Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott), and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) are back.
We should also see Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) return. Congresswoman Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) will have an expanded role after her season-ending cliffhanger moment. Ashley (Colby Minifie) will also be getting a little more screen time in the third season. Hopefully, we also see some more of ex-CIA Deputy Director Grace Mallory (Laila Robins) and Lil Homelander aka Ryan (Cameron Crovetti). Kripke has also admitted that Love Sausage will be back… for anyone interested.
The New Cast

Jensen Ackles will be playing Soldier Boy, who is pretty much the Captain America rip-off. He is billed as the original hero, and Vought had him active in WWII. In the comics, Soldier Boy is a bumbling idiot and an incompetent leader who “leads” the second most popular superhero group in the nation, called Payback.
Katia Winter will play Little Nina a VERY short mobster who has a collection of dildos she is very proud of. That should definitely make for an interesting and mature storyline, especially if they follow the comics closely (sorry, no spoilers for that one. It’s just TOO good).
Jeffrey Dean Morgan was supposed to join the cast, but the pandemic may have altered that course. Nobody outside of the show is 100% sure whether he made it to filming or not.
“Herogasm” & “Payback”
— Eric Kripke (@therealKripke) January 17, 2021
There will be several intersecting plots in The Boys season three. Of course, most of the plot is under wraps, there are a few things that are certain. The first episode will be called “Payback,” named after the superhero group from the comics. “[Payback] was the Seven before the Seven,” Kripke explained. “We will be exploring the history of that team and all the members in it.
The Payback team in the comics included Stormfront, Eagle the Archer, Crimson Countess, Tek Knight, Swatto, and Mind-Droid. We’ve seen Stormfront and Eagle the Archer already (remember, he recruited The Deep into that Church cult). Tek Knight has also been mentioned. However, it’s still uncertain if this roster will be incorporated into the Payback team, or if they will take a different route. However, Payback will be prominently featured in season three, no matter who ends up on the final roster.
Also, episode six is called “Herogasm.” In the comics, Herogasm is a storyline where all the heroes take a secret vacation to an island to have a massive, extended orgy. “I’ve really wanted to do it, but needed to figure out our twist on it, so it’s not just an hour of hardcore porn,” Kripke wrote on Reddit in 2019 about the Herogasm concept. “But I think we got it!! Super excited about that.”
The Plot, Part I
Other than the points mentioned above, the overall plot of the season is a mystery. Stormfront isn’t dead, according to Aya Cash, so we’ll have to see what happens with her. “I’m on a new Fox show now called This Country,” explained Cash. “My contract for The Boys was only for a year so, who knows? Maybe they can CGI my face in.”
“She’s not dead,” stated Kripke. “She’s just a stump. Among the writers and talking with Aya, we’re like, ‘Well, what is going to happen to Stumpfront?’ So we’ll see.”
We also have the matter of Congressman Neuman’s head exploding powers, and Hughie’s new job in her office. “I don’t want to say too much because there’s a certain mystery in season 3 about exactly why Victoria is doing what she’s doing,” Kripke teased. “But, yeah, I think the overall theme of the show is you need to have a healthy suspicion of your authority figures, and that goes for all of them.”
The Plot, Part II
Homelander will be even more of a “homicidal maniac” according to the showrunner, after being blackmailed by Queen Maeve and allowing Starlight back into The Seven. Talking about getting back into The Seven, A-Train will be in the crew again, but The Deep is still a no-go.
Mother’s Milk is back with his family and Frenchie and Kimiko are getting to know each other better. Starlight will still be the snitch inside The Seven, while Edgar still struggles to stop all the leaks. So what’s up with our buddy Butcher? He’s “on the edge as a really fraught character,” Kripke told EW.
We also have the Compound V storyline, which will undoubtedly be front and center after escaping patients like Cindy get brought to the public’s attention. Not like anyone will forget the exploding heads of politicians anytime soon either.
That’s about all we’re getting before season three appears. But if the comics are any indication, fans are about to get the wildest season yet.
