Parents have a lot of responsibility to raise their kids. Everything from what kind of schools they should go to, to how they should be disciplined, and slightly less serious things like how much you’ll spend on gifts for them or how much screen time you’ll let them have need to be decided. And, speaking of screen time, what you allow your kids to watch can also be pretty important, and Walker’s Jared Padalecki has recently opened up about why he didn’t want his kids to watch Supernatural.
It can be hard enough for an adult to decide for oneself what to watch and what to ignore when it comes to the many, many shows on the air, but that task can be even more difficult when figuring out what to allow a kid to look at. This is probably even more true for an actor once his kids become old enough to understand what he does for a living and possibly begin to inquire about seeing him in action.
Jared Padalecki, who now stars on the new CW hit Walker, spoke to Collider recently and talked about why he never wanted his kids to watch him in Supernatural. When asked what his family thinks of Walker, Padalecki said:
It’s a great show. I’m really proud of it. Supernatural was funny because my kids couldn’t really watch it because dad is dying or dad is killing somebody or we’re cutting heads off or someone is getting their heart eaten. With Walker, I feel very comfortable saying to everybody on the planet, ‘Hey, you can watch this. You can watch this with your kids. You can watch this with your parents. You can watch this with your friends.’ It’s gonna be fun. It’s heartwarming. It’s a great show for anybody and everybody.
Well, that makes total sense, right? Jared Padalecki and his wife, Genevieve (who appears on Walker as his character’s wife and also worked on Supernatural with him), have three kids under the age of 10 (sons Thomas Colton, 8, and Austin Shepherd, 7, and daughter Odette Elliott, 3). If you’ve seen just one episode of Supernatural, you’ll know that it’s a show which was not especially kid-friendly, what with all the demons, evil angels, murderous entities, and all around bloodshed and such.
To be honest, I loved Supernatural and sometimes the show’s creep factor was a bit too much for me, so it’s pretty easy to understand why the Padaleckis didn’t want their very young children to watch.
But, as Jared Padalecki noted, he’s made a quick transition from a show which was typically too brutal and bloody, to Walker, which has all the hallmarks of a series that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together. As he’s said previously, this version of the character made famous by martial arts master Chuck Norris doesn’t even focus on the Texas Ranger beating criminals into submission, so it’s a gentler affair than Supernatural in every way.
Luckily, it does seem like people have taken to it, as Walker is only in its third week of its freshman season, but has already been renewed for Season 2, after becoming the network’s most watched series premiere in five years. So, it would seem that the junior Padaleckis will be able to see quite a lot of their parents on the small screen in the years to come.
